Thomas J. Schifferns of Red Lodge has been charged with theft, robbery and evidence tampering. The new charges were presented at Carbon County District Court, Aug. 20.

County Attorney Alex Nixon stated in a new affidavit that Schifferns, 33, had stolen approximately $1,500 from James McGregor, had used a handgun during the theft and then thrown it into a snowbank along Highway 212 as he walked back to town. The Red Lodge Police later found the gun after the winter thaw.

Schifferns was charged with killing McGregor, 63, last February at Bear Track trailhead 12 miles south of Red Lodge. He is being held at the Gallatin County Detention Center on $1 million bond with a trial date set for Sept. 24.
